Sidney Alvarez, a three-time Emmy award winner and former television journalist and currently the Marketing and Public Relations Director at Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine, participated in a media panel discussion at the PR Daily and Ragan Communications Media Relations Conference held at the National Press Club on June 6, 2024. The panel, which focused on measuring media metrics and return on investment, provided attendees insights into modern media strategies – including, demonstrating success across paid, earned, shared, and owned media.

Alvarez delved into the intricacies of media manipulation, a technique he described as providing the media with content they want in exchange for achieving organizational goals and promotions. Highlighting his approach, Alvarez shared his adherence to the Madonna Media Manipulation Methodology, a strategic framework designed to enhance outreach efforts.

The Madonna Media Manipulation Methodology, as explained by Alvarez, comprises of three steps:

1.     Reinvent Yourself: Embrace new programs, products, or ideas to stay relevant and innovative.

2.     Age is Just a Number: Fight ageism. Recognize the impact of your brand across different generations, whether it's Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, or Generation Z.

3.     Express Yourself: Consistently celebrate your successes and align your brand with current pop culture phenomena to maintain public interest and engagement.

"Understanding and leveraging these steps allows organizations to navigate the complex media landscape effectively," said Alvarez. "It's about adapting and resonating with diverse audiences while staying true to your brand's core message."

Joining Alvarez on the panel were Amanda Coffee from Under Armour and Rachel Reh from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, both of whom contributed valuable perspectives on media metrics and strategy. The discussion underscored the importance of comprehensive media metrics in proving the efficacy of communication strategies. The panel's insights resonated with the attendees, offering them practical tools and methodologies to enhance their media relations efforts.
